A hot air balloon flight is the quietest and most beautiful way to see the countryside around Marrakech. You leave the city in the dark, arrive at a field while the crew prepares the balloons, and then rise slowly into the sky as the first light touches the High Atlas. It lasts about one hour in the air, and the whole morning takes four to five hours. This guide explains how the flight works, what you will see, how the weather affects it, who it suits, and how to prepare so that you enjoy every minute.

Why fly at sunrise?

Balloons fly in the early morning because the air is calm. After the sun warms the ground, the wind rises and becomes irregular, which makes a flight less safe and less comfortable. At dawn, the air is cool and stable, and the balloon can float gently. The light is also the best of the day, soft and golden, and the mountains show clearly if the sky is clear.

A balloon travels with the wind, not against it. The pilot cannot steer it like a plane. Instead, the pilot uses height: the wind blows in different directions at different levels, and by rising or descending the pilot can choose a direction. This is why the route changes from one flight to the next, and why a good pilot is so important.

What you see from the air

The take-off fields lie in the countryside north of Marrakech, about thirty to forty kilometres from the city, depending on the launch site. From the basket, you see small Berber villages, fields, palm trees and the red earth of the plains. Around the edges, the hills of the Jbilet and the dry stony landscape of the Agafay appear in the distance. To the south, the High Atlas stands in a long line, and in winter and early spring its peaks are often covered with snow.

The ground looks like a patchwork of brown, green and ochre. People wave from the villages, and children run after the balloons. At that height the sounds from the ground reach you clearly: a dog, a rooster, a voice. It is quiet in the basket, apart from the burners, which sound like a deep roar and warm the back of your head.

The morning, step by step

Our balloon morning follows a clear pattern. The exact times change with the sunrise, and we send them to you by email the day before.

  1. 05:30 (between 5:00 and 6:30): pickup at your hotel or riad in Marrakech or the Palmeraie.
  2. 06:15: arrival at the launch field, with tea or coffee and a croissant while the crew inflates the balloons. The pilot gives a safety briefing.
  3. 06:45: take-off. The flight lasts about one hour, following the wind over villages, fields and the edge of the Agafay.
  4. 07:45: landing in a field, with a small celebration and your flight certificate.
  5. 08:15: traditional Berber breakfast in a tent, with fresh bread, msemen, olive oil, honey, eggs, juice and mint tea.
  6. 09:30: return to Marrakech, with the whole day still ahead of you.

The pickup is early, but the morning is relaxed. Many guests say that the breakfast after landing is one of the nicest parts, because the whole group shares the story of the flight over fresh bread and tea.

How a balloon flight works

A hot air balloon is simple in principle. A large fabric envelope is filled with air, and burners heat that air. Hot air is lighter than the cooler air around it, so the balloon rises. When the pilot stops heating, the air cools slowly and the balloon descends. The basket hangs under the envelope and carries the pilot and the passengers.

On the field, the crew lays the envelope on the ground and fills it first with cold air using a large fan, and then with hot air from the burners. When the envelope stands upright, the passengers climb into the basket. The take-off is smooth. Many people do not notice the moment they leave the ground, and only realise it when the field has become small.

The landing is also gentle. The pilot chooses an open field, and a chase crew follows by road with a vehicle, so the group is collected and driven to breakfast. Sometimes the basket touches down and tilts a little, and the pilot briefs you before landing to hold the handles and bend your knees.

Weather and cancellations

Balloons depend on wind and visibility, more than any other tour. If the wind is too strong, if there is fog or low cloud, or if the forecast looks unsafe, the flight does not go ahead. The decision is made for safety, and it is made close to the morning, often at the field.

If the weather stops your flight, you get a new date or a full refund. That is how we run the tour, and we tell you before you book. Because of this, it is wise not to book a balloon on your last morning in Marrakech. Plan it early in your stay, so there is a second chance if the first morning is cancelled.

The season runs mainly from October to April, when the mornings are cool and calm. Outside those months, write to us before you plan around a flight, and we will tell you honestly what to expect.

Is it safe?

Ballooning has a good safety record when it is done by trained pilots with proper equipment. The pilot checks the weather, the envelope and the burners before every flight, and gives a briefing to the passengers. Our flight includes flight insurance and a licensed pilot.

As a passenger, you help by following simple rules. Listen to the briefing. Keep your hands inside the basket. Do not climb on the edge to take photographs. Keep loose items, such as hats and sunglasses, secure. For landing, hold the handles and bend your knees as the pilot asks.

If you feel unsure, tell the crew. They deal with nervous first-timers every week, and they will explain each step.

Who is it for?

Most healthy adults and older children enjoy a balloon flight. You do not need to climb or run, and you stay in the basket, standing up. The step into the basket is a small climb over the edge, and the crew helps.

  • Fear of heights is less of a problem than you might think. A balloon rises without a sense of speed, and the basket feels stable. Many people with mild vertigo are comfortable. If you are very afraid of heights, think carefully.
  • The flight is not suitable for children under 5 or for pregnant women.
  • Guests over 120 kg must confirm with us before booking, so we can arrange the right basket.
  • Reduced mobility: the climb into the basket and the landing make the flight difficult. Write to us and we will tell you honestly.

What to wear and bring

The morning is cold, even in spring, and it takes a few minutes for the sun to warm the air. Dress in layers that you can take off once the sun is up.

  • A warm jacket, a hat or a beanie for the start.
  • Long trousers and closed, flat shoes. Avoid sandals and heels.
  • Layers that you can remove after sunrise, because the burners warm your head and the sun warms the basket.
  • A phone or camera with a wrist strap and a charged battery. Carry little else.
  • Cash for tips. The crew and the pilot are glad to receive a thank you.

Long hair should be tied back, because the burners are close to your head. Loose scarves are best left at the hotel.

Photography in the basket

A balloon flight is a photographer's dream, and it is also a flight where you can spend so much time with the camera that you forget to look. The best tip is to take a handful of photographs in the first five minutes, then put the phone away for a while.

Shoot toward the sun for silhouettes of other balloons, and away from it for the golden light on the hills. Wide shots of the plains and the mountains work best on a phone. If you want pictures of yourself in the air, the crew can take your photograph on the ground, and the operator sometimes offers photographs and videos for an extra fee.

Planning the rest of your day

The morning ends early. You are back at your hotel around half past nine, with the whole day ahead of you. This is one of the advantages of a balloon flight: it hardly takes any of your time.

Most guests have a rest, a shower and a second breakfast, then spend the late morning in the medina or at a garden, before the heat arrives. Some people sleep for an hour. A hammam in the afternoon is a lovely way to relax after an early start. If you plan a busy day, a balloon morning, a lunch in the city and a sunset dinner in the Agafay make a memorable day for a special occasion.

If you travel with a partner, many couples choose a balloon flight for an anniversary or a birthday. Tell us about the occasion when you book, and we will do what we can to make the morning special.

The Berber breakfast

After the landing, a tent is set up with a long table. The breakfast is traditional and generous. It includes warm bread, msemen (a layered pancake), olive oil, honey, eggs, fresh juice and mint tea. The food is simple and fresh, and everything tastes better after a morning in the air.

If you have dietary needs, such as no eggs or no gluten, tell us when you book. We will check with the team what can be arranged. The breakfast is also a good moment to talk to the crew and ask questions about balloons, the area and the villages you saw from above.

Questions first-time passengers ask

Will I feel the wind?

Almost not. The balloon moves with the air, so you do not feel the wind on your face. The only sensation is the rise and fall, which is smooth.

Is it noisy?

The burners are loud for a few seconds each time the pilot fires them, then it is quiet again. Some people are surprised by the warmth from the burners on the back of the head.

Can I take a flight if I wear glasses?

Yes. Wear them with a strap if you want to be extra safe, and keep a spare pair or a case in a pocket.

Do I need to book far ahead?

In the busy months, yes. The baskets are limited, and the best dates fill first. Write to us as soon as you know your travel dates.

Balloon flight or other early-morning plans?

A balloon flight is an expensive morning compared with most activities in Marrakech, and it is fair to ask if it is the right choice for you. The answer depends on what you value. If you like quiet, views and a feeling of floating, nothing else in the region gives you the same experience. If you prefer movement and speed, a quad or a buggy ride is better value. If you want culture, a morning in the medina with a guide is richer.

For many travellers, the balloon is the one splurge of the trip, and they remember it long after the holiday. Think of it as a special occasion, and plan a quiet day around it. Others save it for the end of a longer stay, when they have already seen the main sights and want a different perspective on the same landscape.

Whatever you choose, try to keep a day without an early start before and after the flight. The pickup is between 5:00 and 6:30, and sleep matters.

Seeing the Atlas from above

From the basket, the High Atlas looks very different from the view you get from the road. You see its full length, from the Jbilet hills in the west to the high peaks in the south, with the plain between. In winter, the contrast between white snow and red earth is striking. On a clear morning, you can sense how close the mountains are to the city, and why Marrakech has always been a gateway to them.

If you plan a day in the mountains later in your trip, the flight gives you a useful preview. You see the valleys that lead into the range, and you start to understand the geography that shapes the roads, the villages and the climate. A calm, honest word about expectations

A good balloon flight is peaceful and beautiful. It is not a thrill ride, and it does not give you a close-up of the city. The balloon lands where the wind takes it, which is often in farmland, and you may not see the Marrakech skyline at all. Think of it as a flight over the countryside, with the mountains as a backdrop, and you will not be disappointed.

Some mornings are better than others. A clear sky and light wind give long views and a soft landing. A hazy morning gives a softer, more mysterious picture. Either way, the experience of rising slowly into silence is the point.

How to prepare the night before

Because the pickup is early, a little preparation the night before makes the morning easier. Lay out your clothes and your jacket, charge your phone and check that the hotel knows about the early start. Many riads can prepare a small breakfast bag or let you leave without disturbing the house. Go to bed early, drink some water, and avoid a heavy meal late in the evening.

In the morning, drink a small glass of water and eat lightly. The croissant and tea at the field will give you energy, and the large breakfast after landing is the real meal. If you take medicine in the morning, bring it with you. And remember to go to the toilet before you leave, since the field does not have comfortable facilities.

Finally, save our email address and the confirmation message in your phone, so you can reach us quickly if your plans change. We will send the exact pickup time by email the day before.
