On wheels: quad and buggy

The Agafay desert is the best place near Marrakech for off road riding. The hills are open and rocky, the views reach the High Atlas, and there are few other vehicles. A quad gives you the most direct feeling of riding, with a briefing before you start, a helmet, goggles and a scarf, and about an hour and a half on the quad. A buggy seats two, so you can share the drive with a friend, and the price is for the whole buggy.

If you have less time, the Palmeraie buggy is only 20 minutes from your hotel and runs between palm trees and small villages for about an hour and a half.

On four wheels: the Atlas by 4x4

The Atlas 4x4 tour uses a comfortable 4x4 with a maximum of six guests per vehicle, and takes you through the Asni and Imlil valleys, with panoramic stops and a walk of about an hour and a half through villages below Toubkal. Lunch is in a Berber home.

The Road of the Kasbahs is the big road trip: the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the kasbah of Telouet and Aït Benhaddou, with lunch included. It is a long day of about 12 hours, with short walks and a lot of scenery.

On foot: Ouzoud

The walk at Ouzoud is about an hour and a half on steps and paths, with a climb back up. You see the falls from above and below, and you can take a boat ride at the base. The Barbary macaques live along the path, and you must not feed them. The walk is moderate. Good shoes make a real difference.

In the air: the balloon

The balloon is the most peaceful adventure on this page. You stand in a basket with a licensed pilot and float for an hour while the sun comes up over the plains. Flights depend on the weather, and if the flight is cancelled, you get a new date or a full refund.

How to prepare

  • Choose the season carefully. October to May is the best for desert rides. In summer, choose early morning.
  • Wear closed shoes and clothes that can get dusty or wet. Bring water and sunscreen.
  • Tell us about injuries, back problems, pregnancy or fear of heights before you book.
  • Follow the guide's instructions on every ride. Speed is not the goal, the views are.
