A luxury Sahara trip is not about gold taps in the dunes. It is about removing the parts of a desert journey that tire people out: crowded vehicles, rushed stops, shared bathrooms and a camp that is too busy to feel like a desert. This guide explains what a private or comfort Sahara experience from Marrakech really includes, which routes suit couples and families, what to ask for before you pay, and how to add a calmer start in the Agafay desert or a sunrise balloon flight. We help you plan the trip and tell you honestly what we can arrange.
What luxury actually means in the desert
In Morocco the word luxury is used loosely, so it helps to define it. For a desert trip we mean four things: a private vehicle with a driver who knows the route, accommodation with real beds and a private bathroom, a camp with few tents and plenty of space around them, and a pace you control. Everything else is detail.
Comfort camps vary. Some offer large tents with proper beds, private bathrooms with hot water, rugs and lanterns, and a dinner served at your own table. Others use the word luxury for tents that are only slightly better than a simple camp. Ask for photographs of the actual tent you will sleep in, and ask how many tents the camp has in total.
Private transport changes the whole trip
The long drives are what make the Sahara hard, and a private vehicle is the best way to make them easy. You choose the departure time, the stops, the pace, the music and whether to spend another hour in Aït Benhaddou. If someone feels unwell on the mountain road you can stop immediately.
A private driver and guide for the route also means you are not tied to a group schedule. For couples this makes the journey feel like a trip of its own rather than a transfer. For families, it makes the drive bearable, because you control rest stops and meals.
Choosing the route
Merzouga and Erg Chebbi
The classic choice, with the tallest dunes and the most comfort camps. It needs three days at minimum and four to be comfortable. Our 4 day Sahara itinerary describes the route in detail.
Zagora and M'Hamid
A shorter drive, with a more remote feel at the end of the road. The dunes are lower and the camps are fewer. It suits travellers who want to be away from the crowds and have less time.
The Agafay desert
A stone desert forty minutes from Marrakech, where several camps offer a sunset dinner and a night under the stars. It is not the big dunes, but it is easy and beautiful. Our Agafay sunset dinner and the Agafay desert guide show what to expect. Many couples start a longer trip with one night here, because it breaks the pace.
A sample private itinerary for couples
- Day 1: Collect from your riad in Marrakech. Cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stop at Aït Benhaddou for a slow walk and a long lunch, then sleep in a boutique guesthouse in Skoura or Ouarzazate.
- Day 2: Drive through the Dades valley and the Todra gorge. Arrive at the dunes in the late afternoon, ride a camel to the comfort camp and have dinner at your own table.
- Day 3: Sunrise over the dunes, a long breakfast and a slow morning. Drive back towards Ouarzazate or the Dades valley, with time for a swim or a walk before dinner.
- Day 4: Return to Marrakech by late afternoon. End with a hammam and massage in a riad, which is the best recovery after four days on the road.
You can shorten it by choosing the Agafay desert for a single night, or lengthen it by adding a second night in the dunes.
For families: how to make the Sahara work with children
Children usually love the camel ride and the sand, and dislike the car. A family trip works if you plan around them. Choose the 4 day version, ask for a private vehicle, leave after breakfast, stop for a swim when you can and bring snacks and entertainment. Choose a comfort camp with private bathrooms, because a shared toilet in the dark is a bad idea for a small child.
Children from about four years old can ride a camel with an adult. If you are unsure whether the full Sahara is right for your family, start with the Agafay desert for one evening and see how they react to the road and the camp.
Adding a sunrise balloon flight in Marrakech
Many travellers add a hot air balloon flight on the morning of arrival or departure. The flight is early, over the plains outside Marrakech, with the Atlas in front of you, and it ends with a Berber breakfast. It is a good way to start or end a desert trip. See our hot air balloon experience and the guide to the flight. A balloon can be cancelled for wind, so keep a spare morning.
Two small touches that make the trip
A dinner served at your own table under the stars, and a morning with no alarm. Ask for both when you plan. They cost little and shape how you remember the trip.
What to ask for before you pay
- A photograph and description of the tent, the bed and the bathroom.
- The number of tents in the camp and how far it is from other camps.
- Whether the vehicle is private, how many seats it has and whether it is air conditioned.
- The full list of what is included: meals, drinks, entrance fees, camel ride, guide.
- The cancellation terms, and what happens if wind, rain or snow change the plan.

Frequently asked questions
What is included in a luxury Sahara tour?
Typically a private vehicle and driver, nights in boutique guesthouses and a comfort camp, breakfast and dinner, a camel ride and a guide. The exact list depends on the plan, so ask for it in writing.
Is a private Sahara tour worth the extra cost?
For couples and families, usually yes. The long drives are the hardest part of the trip, and a private vehicle gives you control over pace, stops and timing.
Is there heating in a comfort camp?
Some comfort camps have heated tents or extra blankets in winter. Ask directly, because nights in the dunes can be close to freezing from December to February.
Can we add a hot air balloon flight?
Yes, near Marrakech, on the morning before or after the trip. See our balloon flight.
What is the best time for a luxury desert trip?
October to April for comfortable days and cool nights. Spring and autumn are the best compromise.
