The Ourika Valley is the closest green valley to Marrakech, about an hour and a quarter by road, and the most popular mountain day trip from the city. It offers cool air in summer, a river, terraced fields, Berber villages and a walk to the waterfalls of Setti Fatma. This guide explains what to expect, how the day works, when to go, what to wear and how to choose between the valley and the other Atlas options. We run an Ourika day trip from Marrakech, so this comes from our own experience of the road.
Where the Ourika Valley is
The valley lies south of Marrakech, running up into the High Atlas towards the Toubkal massif, the highest range in North Africa. The road follows the Ourika river through small villages of red clay houses, and the air changes as you climb. In summer the valley is noticeably cooler than the city, which is why many Marrakchis come here for a weekend lunch beside the river.
How the day works
A typical day trip leaves Marrakech in the morning, drives about an hour and a quarter to the valley and stops in the village of Setti Fatma, at the end of the road. From there you walk with a local guide along the river and up a rocky path to the waterfalls. The walk is short but uneven, and it is more of a scramble than a stroll in places. You return for lunch, often at a riverside restaurant, then drive back to Marrakech in the afternoon.
Along the way, stops commonly include a Berber house for mint tea and bread, and a women's argan or herb cooperative. The details differ by tour, so check what yours includes. You can see our Ourika Valley tour for the current itinerary and prices.
The Setti Fatma waterfalls
Setti Fatma is a village at the head of the valley, and its waterfalls are a series of cascades that fall over rocks. In spring, when the snow in the mountains melts, the water is fuller and louder. In late summer, the flow is much lighter. The path can be slippery near the water, so you need shoes with grip, not sandals. Local guides help you across the rocks. If the river is high after rain, the walk can be shortened or cancelled.
The weekly market
One of the pleasures of the valley is the weekly market at Tnine Ourika, held on Mondays, where villagers sell vegetables, spices and household goods. If your trip falls on that day, it is worth a short stop. On other days, the roadside stalls sell argan oil, honey, saffron and herbs, and the quality varies, so ask for the origin and agree the price first.
Best season
- Spring (March to May): the green season, with fuller waterfalls and fields in bloom.
- Summer (June to August): the valley is a cool escape from the city, and a good choice in the heat.
- Autumn (September to November): comfortable and quieter, with warm light.
- Winter (December to February): cold, with snow on the peaks, and some days when roads or walks are affected by weather.

What to wear and bring
- Closed shoes with grip. The path to the waterfalls is rocky and wet.
- A light layer. The valley is cooler than Marrakech, and it can be chilly in the shade.
- Sun protection and water.
- Cash in dirham for tea, tips and small purchases.
- A change of socks, if you plan to cross the stream.
Ourika or another Atlas trip?
Ourika is the easy and green option. If you want something quieter, the Atlas 4x4 with lunch in a Berber village goes deeper into the mountains. For big waterfalls and a longer day, see Ouzoud. For kasbahs and a film-set village, choose the Road of the Kasbahs. Our Atlas Mountains day trips guide compares all of them, and our Atlas Mountains tours page lists the options.
Is the Ourika Valley suitable for children?
Yes, for most children who can walk on uneven ground. The drive is short compared with other mountain trips, and the riverside setting is relaxing. The waterfall walk can be tiring for very small children, and a parent needs to hold their hand near the rocks. Bring snacks and a spare layer.
Mountain safety
Mountain rivers can rise quickly after rain, and flash floods have happened in the Ourika area. A good guide watches the weather, avoids the river when it is high and tells you when to turn back. Respect these decisions. The valley was also affected by the 2023 earthquake, and local families welcome visitors who support their cooperatives and restaurants.
